With the Senate Majority now securely in the hands of the Democrats, both the Senate and Assembly passed an unprecedented amount of legislation early in this year’s session. Many of these bills had been blocked for years by the former Republican Majority. Actions which were approved by the Governor include:
• The Reproductive Health Act – codifies and expands a woman’s right to an abortion.
• The Dream Act – Allows undocumented students, many of whom were brought to the United States as children, to be eligible for state scholarships.
• The Child’s Victims Act – Expands the statute of limitations for reporting childhood sexual abuse for those who seek to bring charges against their abusers in adulthood.
• Gun Control – A series of measures to limit the purchase and carrying of fire arms including a bill that would prohibit gun procession for those deemed to be in danger to themselves and others.
